Nutrition labels can be confusing, but learning to read them is a powerful tool for making healthier food choices.
Start with the Serving Size
All the information on the label is based on the serving size listed. Be sure to check how many servings are in the package.
Check the Calories
The number of calories tells you how much energy you'll get from one serving of the food.
Look at the Macronutrients
Pay attention to the amounts of fat, carbohydrates, and protein. Choose foods that are lower in saturated and trans fats, and higher in fiber and protein.
Read the Ingredients List
Ingredients are listed in order of weight, from most to least. Look for whole food ingredients at the beginning of the list and avoid foods with long lists of artificial ingredients.
